crackle - Crack Bluetooth Smart (BLE) Encryption

crackle cracks BLE Encryption (AKA Bluetooth Smart).

crackle exploits a flaw in the BLE pairing process that allows an attacker to guess or very quickly brute force the TK (Temporary Key). With the TK and other data collected from the pairing process, the STK (Short Term Key) and later the LTK (Long Term Key) can be collected.

With the STK and LTK, all communications between the master and the slave can be decrypted.
Before attempting to use crackle, review the FAQ to determine whether it is the appropriate tool to use in your situation.

crackle was written by Mike Ryan mikeryan@lacklustre.net See web site for more info: http://lacklustre.net/projects/crackle/

Modes of Operation
crackle has two major modes of operation: Crack TK and Decrypt with LTK.

Crack TK
This is the default mode used when providing crackle with an input file using -i .
In Crack TK mode, crackle brute forces the TK used during a BLE pairing event. crackle exploits the fact that the TK in Just Works(tm) and 6-digit PIN is a value in the range [0,999999] padded to 128 bits.
crackle employs several methods to perform this brute force: a very fast method if all pairing packets are present in the input file, and a slow method if a minimum set of packets is present.
To use this mode, launch crackle with an input PCAP or PcapNG file containing one or more connections with a BLE pairing conversation. crackle will analyze all connections, determine whether it is possible to crack a given connection, and automatically choose the best strategy to crack each one.
If the TK successfully cracks, crackle will derive the remaining keys used to encrypt the rest of the connection and will decrypt any encrypted packets that follow. If the LTK is exchanged (typically the first thing done after encryption is established) crackle will output this value to stdout. The LTK can be used to decrypt any future communications between the two endpoints.
Provide crackle with an output file using -o to create a new PCAP file containing the decrypted data (in addition to the already unencrypted data).
Example usage:
$ crackle -i input.pcap -o decrypted.pcap

Decrypt with LTK
In Decrypt with LTK mode, crackle uses a user-supplied LTK to decrypt communications between a master and slave. This mode is identical to the decryption portion of Crack TK mode.
Example usage:
$ crackle -i encrypted.pcap -o decrypted.pcap -l 81b06facd90fe7a6e9bbd9cee59736a7

Running Crackle

Crack TK Mode
In Crack TK mode, crackle requires a PCAP file that contains a BLE pairing event. The best way to generate such a file is to use an Ubertooth to capture a pairing event between a master and a slave.
To check if your PCAP file contains all the necessary packets, run crackle with the -i option:
crackle -i <file.pcap>
crackle will analyze each connection in the input file and output the results of its analysis to stdout. If you have all the components of a pairing conversation, the output will look like this:
Analyzing connection 0:
xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx (public) -> yy:yy:yy:yy:yy:yy (public)
Found 13 encrypted packets

Cracking with strategy 0, 20 bits of entropy

!!!
TK found: 412741
!!!

Decrypted 12 packets
LTK found: 81b06facd90fe7a6e9bbd9cee59736a7

Specify an output file with -o to decrypt packets!
To decrypt all packets, add the -o option:
crackle -i <file.pcap> -o <output.pcap>
The output file will contain decrypted versions of all the encrypted packets from the original PCAP, as well as all the unencrypted packets. Note that CRCs are not recalculated, so the CRCs of decrypted packets will be incorrect.

Decrypt with LTK
In Decrypt with LTK mode, crackle requires a PCAP file that contains at a minimum LL_ENC_REQ and LL_ENC_RSP packets and the LTK used to encrypt the communications.
The format for LTK is a 128 bit hexadecimal number with no spaces or separators, most-significant octet to least-significant octet. Example:
-l 81b06facd90fe7a6e9bbd9cee59736a7
To check if your PCAP file contains all the necessary packets, run crackle with -i and -l:
crackle -i <file.pcap> -l <ltk>
If you have both of the required packets, the program should produce output similar to this:
Analyzing connection 0:
xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx (public) -> yy:yy:yy:yy:yy:yy (public)
Found 9 encrypted packets
Decrypted 6 packets

Specify an output file with -o to decrypt packets!
To decrypt all packets, add the -o option:
crackle -i <file.pcap> -o <out.pcap> -l <ltk>
The output file will be produced similarly to the output file described above.

John the Ripper 1.8.0-jumbo-1 - Fast Password Cracker

John the Ripper is a free password cracking software tool. Initially developed for the Unix operating system, it now runs on fifteen different platforms (eleven of which are architecture-specific versions of Unix, DOS, Win32, BeOS, and OpenVMS). It is one of the most popular password testing and breaking programs as it combines a number of password crackers into one package, autodetects password hash types, and includes a customizable cracker. It can be run against various encrypted password formats including several crypt password hash types most commonly found on various Unix versions (based on DES, MD5, or Blowfish), Kerberos AFS, and Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 LM hash. Additional modules have extended its ability to include MD4-based password hashes and passwords stored in LDAP, MySQL, and others.

John the Ripper 1.8.0-jumbo-1 is based on today’s code from the bleeding-jumbo branch on GitHub, which we’ve tried to make somewhat stable lately in preparation for this release.

You may notice that the source code archive size has increased from under 2 MB to over 20 MB. This is primarily due to the included .chr files, which are both bigger and more numerous than pre-1.8 ones. There are lots of source code additions, too.

In fact:

This is probably the biggest single jumbo update so far. The changes are too numerous to summarize – unfortunately, we haven’t been doing that during development, and it’d be a substantial effort to do it now, delaying the release to next year. So we chose to go ahead and release whatever we’ve got. (Of course, there are the many commit messages -but that’s not a summary.)

A really brief summary, though, is that there are new “formats” (meaning more supported hash and “non-hash” types, both on CPU and on GPU), various enhancements to existing ones, mask mode, better support for non-ASCII character sets, and of course all of 1.8.0’s features (including –fork and –node). And new bugs. Oh, and we’re now using autoconf, meaning that you need to “./configure” and “make”, with all the usual pros and cons of this approach. There’s a Makefile.legacy included, so you may “make -f Makefile.legacy” to try and build JtR the old way if you refuse to use autoconf… for now…and this _might_ even work… but you’d better bite the bullet. (BTW, I have no current plans on autoconf’ing non-jumbo versions of JtR.)

Due to autoconf, things such as OpenMP and OpenCL are now enabled automatically (if system support for them is detected during build). When this is undesirable, you may use e.g. “./configure –disable-openmp” or “./configure –disable-openmp-for-fast-formats” and run with –fork to achieve a higher cumulative c/s rate across the fork’ed processes.

Out of over 4800 commits since 1.7.9-jumbo-7, over 2600 are by magnum, making him the top contributor. Other prolific contributors are JimF, Dhiru Kholia, Claudio Andre, Frank Dittrich, Sayantan Datta.

There are also multiple commits by (or attributed to) Lukas Odzioba, ShaneQful, Alexander Cherepanov, rofl0r, bwall, Narendra Kangralkar, Tavis Ormandy, Spiros Fraganastasis, Harrison Neal, Vlatko Kosturjak, Aleksey Cherepanov, Jeremi Gosney, junmuz, Thiebaud Weksteen, Sanju Kholia, Michael Samuel, Deepika Dutta, Costin Enache, Nicolas Collignon, Michael Ledford. There are single commits by (or attributed to) many other contributors as well (including even one by atom of hashcat).

[Ncrack] High-Speed Network Authentication Cracker

Ncrack is a high-speed network authentication cracking tool. It was built to help companies secure their networks by proactively testing all their hosts and networking devices for poor passwords. Security professionals also rely on Ncrack when auditing their clients. Ncrack was designed using a modular approach, a command-line syntax similar to Nmap and a dynamic engine that can adapt its behaviour based on network feedback. It allows for rapid, yet reliable large-scale auditing of multiple hosts.

Ncrack's features include a very flexible interface granting the user full control of network operations, allowing for very sophisticated bruteforcing attacks, timing templates for ease of use, runtime interaction similar to Nmap's and many more. Protocols supported include RDP, SSH, http(s), SMB, pop3(s), VNC, FTP, and telnet.

Ncrack was started as a "Google Summer of Code" Project in 2009. While it is already useful for some purposes, it is still unfinished, alpha quality software. It is released as a standalone tool and can be downloaded from the section below. Be sure to read the Ncrack man page to fully understand Ncrack usage. If you are a developer and want to write your own Ncrack modules, studying the Ncrack Developer's Guide would be the first step.

[PACK] Password Analysis & Cracking Kit

PACK (Password Analysis and Cracking Toolkit) is a collection of utilities developed to aid in analysis of password lists in order to enhance password cracking through pattern detection of masks, rules, character-sets and other password characteristics. The toolkit generates valid input files for Hashcat family of password crackers.

NOTE: The toolkit itself is not able to crack passwords, but instead designed to make operation of password crackers more efficient.

[Router Password Kracker] Router Password Recovery Software

Router Password Kracker is a free software to recover the lost password of your Router. It can also be used to recover password from your internet Modem or Web sites which are protected by HTTP BASIC Authentication.

Generally Routers or Modems control their access by using HTTP BASIC authentication mechanism. In simple words, when you connect to your Modem/Router from the browser (typically http://192.168.1.1) you will be asked to enter username & password. If you ever forget this password then you will not be able to access your Router/Modem configuration. Even some websites use this BASIC Authentication to allow only certain users to access their site.

In these cases 'Router Password Kracker' can help you in quickly recovering your lost password. Also Penetration Testers and Forensic Investigators can find this tool very useful in cracking the Router/Modem/Website password.

[Hashcat v0.46] Multi-Threaded Password Hash Cracking Tool

hashcat claims to be the world’s fastest CPU-based password recovery tool, while not as fast as GPU powered hash brute forcing (like CUDA-Multiforcer), it is still pretty fast.

hashcat was written somewhere in the middle of 2009. Yes, there were already close-to-perfect working tools supporting rule-based attacks like “PasswordsPro”, “John The Ripper”. However for some unknown reason, both of them did not support multi-threading. That was the only reason to write hashcat: To make use of the multiple cores of modern CPUs.

Granted, that was not 100% correct. John the Ripper already supported MPI using a patch, but at that time it worked only for Brute-Force attack. There was no solution available to crack plain MD5 which supports MPI using rule-based attacks.

Hashcat, from its first version, v0.01, was called “atomcrack”. This version was very poor, but at least the MD5 kernel was written in assembler utilizing SSE2 instructions and of course it was multi-threaded. It was a simple dictionary cracker, nothing more. But it was fast. Really fast. Some guys from the scene become interested in it and after one week there were around 10 beta testers. Everything worked fine and so requests for more algorithm types, a rule-engine for mutation of dictionaries, a windows version and different attack modes were added. These developments took around half a year, and were completely non-public.

Features
  • Multi-Threaded
  • Multi-Hash (up to 24 million hashes)
  • Multi-OS (Linux, Windows and OSX native binaries)
  • Multi-Algo (MD4, MD5, SHA1, DCC, NTLM, MySQL, …)
  • SSE2, AVX and XOP accelerated
  • All Attack-Modes except Brute-Force and Permutation can be extended by rules
  • Very fast Rule-engine
  • Rules compatible with JTR and PasswordsPro
  • Possible to resume or limit session
  • Automatically recognizes recovered hashes from outfile at startup
  • Can automatically generate random rules
  • Load saltlist from external file and then use them in a Brute-Force Attack variant
  • Able to work in an distributed environment
  • Specify multiple wordlists or multiple directories of wordlists
  • Number of threads can be configured
  • Threads run on lowest priority
  • Supports hex-charset
  • Supports hex-salt
  • 80+ Algorithms implemented with performance in mind
